label
Ligue 1 (French pronunciation: [liɡ œ]), also called Conforama League 1 for reasons of sponsorship with Conforama, is a French professional league for men's football clubs. At the top of the French soccer league system, it is the country's main soccer competition. Administered by the Professional Football League, Ligue 1 is played by 20 clubs and operates in a promotion and descent system with Ligue 2.

The seasons go from August to May. Each of the teams plays 38 games (each team playing twice in the league, at home and away), totaling 38 games in the season. Most games are played on Saturdays and Sundays, with some games played on weeknights. The game is suspended regularly the last weekend before Christmas for two weeks before returning the second week of January. Ligue 1 is one of the best national leagues, currently ranked fifth in Europe behind the Spanish League, the English Premier League, the Italian Serie A, and the German Bundesliga.

League 1 was inaugurated on September 11, 1932, under the name of National before moving to Division 1 after a year of existence. The name lasted until 2002 before moving on to its current name. AS Saint-Etienne is the most successful club with ten league titles in France, while Olympique Lyonnais is the club that has won the most consecutive titles (seven between 2002 and 2008). With 69 seasons in Ligue 1, Olympique de Marseille holds the record for the most seasons of the elite, while Paris Saint-Germain has the longevity record with 45 consecutive seasons (from 1974 to 2019 at least). The current champions are Paris Saint-Germain, who won his seventh title in 2017-2018. The championship has been won several times by AS Monaco, a club established abroad, which makes the league cross-border competition.

History
Foundation
Professionalism in French football did not exist until July 1930, when the National Council of the French Football Federation voted between 128 and 20 in favor of its adoption. The founding fathers of professionalism in French football are Georges Bayrou, Emmanuel Gambardella, and Gabriel Hanot. Professionalism was formally established in 1932.

In order to successfully create a professional soccer league in the country, the Federation has limited the league to twenty clubs. To participate in the contest, the clubs underwent three important criteria:

Many clubs did not agree with the subjective criteria, including Strasbourg, RC Roubaix, Amiens SC, and Stade Français, while others, such as Rennes and Olympique Lille, hesitated to become professionals for various reasons, mainly due to the bankruptcy of Rennes. and a conflict of interests with this last club, the president of the team, Henri Jooris, who has also been president of the Northern League. Jooris worried that his league would retire and set out to become the second division of the new league. Finally, many clubs have acquired professional status, but it has become more difficult to convince clubs in the northern half of the country. Strasbourg, RC Roubaix, and Amiens refused to accept the new league, while, on the other hand, Mulhouse, Excelsior AC Roubaix, Metz and Fives accepted professionalism. In the south of France, clubs like Olympique Marseille, Hyères, SO Montpellier, SC Nimes, Cannes, Antibes, and Nice have supported the new league and have accepted their professional status without discussion.

Establishment
The inaugural season of the professional league, called National, was held in 1932-1933. The first 20 national members were Antibes CA Paris, Cannes, French club, Excelsior AC Roubaix, Fives, Hyères, Marseille, Metz, Mulhouse, Nice, Nîmes Olympique Ales, Olympique de Lille, Racing Club de France, Red Star Olympic. Rennes, Sochaux, Sète, and Montpellier. 20 clubs were divided into two groups of 10, the last three of each group being relegated to division 2. The two winners of each group competed in a final held at a neutral location. Olympic Yves-du-Manoir. The first final was held on May 14, 1933, and opposed the Group A winner, Olympique Lille, to second place in Group B, Cannes. Antibes, the winner of Group B, was supposed to participate in the final, but was suspected of corruption by the French Football Federation and was forced to disqualify. In the first final, Lillois was crowned inaugural champion after the 4-3 victory of the club. After the season, the league decided to keep the 14 clubs and not promote any teams in the second division. The league also agreed to change its National Division to name 1. For the 1934-35 season, the league organized a system of promotions and declines legitimate interposition to 16 the total number of first division clubs. -39 season.

Due to World War II, French football was suspended by the French government and the Professional Football League, although its member clubs continued to participate in regional competitions. During the "war championships" as they are called, the Vichy regime abolished professionalism and the clubs were forced to participate in the regional leagues, called the South Zone and the North Zone. Due to their lack of association with the two leagues, the LFP and FFF do not recognize the championships won by the clubs and, consequently, 1939-1945 there is a perspective of both organizations. After the end of the war and the liberation of France, professional football returned to France. The first division increased its number of clubs to 18. This number was maintained until the 1965-1966 season when this number was increased to 20. In 2002, the league changed its name from division 1 to league 1.

Competition format
There are 20 Ligue 1 clubs. During a season, usually, from August to May each club plays twice, once in the stadium and once in their opponents, for a total of 38 matches. Circumstances may allow a club to host matches at other sites, such as when it hosted Lille Lyon at the Stade de France in 2007 and 2008. The teams receive three points for a win and a point for a draw. No points are awarded for a loss. The teams are classified by total points, then by the difference of goals, then the goals are scored. At the end of each season, the club with the most points was crowned champion. If the points are equal, the difference between goals and the goals scored determine the winner. If they are still equal, it is considered that the teams occupy the same position. If there is a tie for the championship, for the relegation or for the qualification in other competitions, a jump-off in a neutral place decides the rank. For the 2015/16 season only two teams that are going to descend and only 2 Ligue 2 teams to be promoted, but this decision was reversed and 3 teams were relegated and three teams were promoted. It was, therefore, the 2016-17 season that saw the return of a decent bombing between the Ligue 1 team, 18th place, and the 3rd Ligue 2 team, in a two-part game.

Previously, the league used a different promotion and descent format. Before 1995, the format of the league was the direct relegation of the last two teams and a tie-break between the third division team and the winner of the second division playoffs, such as the Dutch Eredivisie and Germany. Bundesliga. The league has also experimented with a bonus rule. From 1973 to 1976, a rule rewarded teams that scored three or more goals in a match with an extra point, regardless of the result, to encourage offensive play. The experiment was finally inconclusive. At the beginning of the 2006-2007 season, the league established an attack table to encourage the scoring of more goals in Ligue 1 and Ligue 2. With the help of former director Michel Hidalgo, the LFP presented the idea of rewarding this equipment. who scored the most goals The table was similar to the previous idea, but it was independent of the official classification and the clubs only received monetary bonuses.

European qualification
Starting in the 2017/18 season, determined by the UEFA coefficient, the three best teams in Ligue 1 qualify for the Champions League, and the first two teams will go directly to the group stage. The third classified team enters the third qualifying round. The fourth classified qualifies for the UEFA Europa League. The other two places in the Europa League are determined by the two national cup competitions, the Coupe de France and the Coupe de la Ligue. If the two winners of the cup qualify for Europe thanks to their classification, the teams of the fifth and sixth places of Ligue 1 will qualify for the Europa League.
