According to FIFA, the Chinese competition game cuju (ally, literally "kick ball") is the oldest form of football for which there is evidence. Cuju players could use any part of the body out of their hands and the intention was to hit a ball through an opening in a net. It was remarkably similar to modern football, although similarities with rugby have occurred. During the Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD), cuju games were standardized and rules established.

Phaininda and episkyros were Greek ball games. An image of an episkyros player depicted in bas-relief on a vase at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens is featured on the UEFA European Championship Cup. Athenaeus, writing in 228 AD, referred to the harpastum of the Roman ball game. Phaininda, episkyros and harpastum were played with the hands and the violence. They all seem to have looked like rugby, wrestling and volleyball, more than what is recognizable in modern football. As in the case of pre-coded "mass football", the antecedent of all modern football codes, these three games involved more handling of the ball than kicking. Other games include kemari in Japan, chuk-guk in Korea and woggabaliri in Australia.

Association football itself does not have a classic history. Despite being similar to other ball games played around the world, FIFA has recognized that there is no historical connection to a game played in antiquity outside Europe. The modern rules of associative football are based on efforts made in the middle of the 19th century to standardize the most diverse forms of football practiced in public schools in England. The history of football in England dates back at least to the eighth century AD.

The Cambridge Rules, first developed at the University of Cambridge in 1848, played a particularly important role in the development of the following codes, including association football. The Cambridge Rules were written at Trinity College, Cambridge, at a meeting attended by representatives from the schools of Eton, Harrow, Rugby, Winchester and Shrewsbury. They have not been universally adopted. In the 1850s, many clubs unrelated to schools or universities were created in the English-speaking world, to play different forms of football. Some have developed their own code of conduct, including the Sheffield Football Club, formed in 1857 by former public school students, which resulted in the formation of a Sheffield FA in 1867. In 1862, John Charles Thring of Uppingham's school set of influential rules.

These ongoing efforts contributed to the formation of the Football Association (The FA) in 1863, which met for the first time on the morning of October 26, 1863 at the Freemasons' Tavern on Great Queen Street, London. The only school to be represented on this occasion was Charterhouse. Freemason's Tavern was the scene of five more meetings between October and December, which finally produced the first complete set of rules. In the final meeting, the first Treasurer of the FA, the representative of Blackheath, withdrew his club from the FA after the suppression of two draft rules at the previous meeting: the first allowed to run with the ball in hand; the second to obstruct such a race by pirating (kicking an opponent in the shins), stumbling and holding. Other English rugby clubs followed this track and did not join the FA. In 1871, they formed the Rugby Union. The remaining eleven clubs, under the responsibility of Ebenezer Cobb Morley, then ratified the thirteen laws of the game. These rules included the handling of the ball by "marks" and the absence of a crossbar, rules that made it remarkably similar to the Victorian football under development in Australia. FA Sheffield played according to its own rules until the 1870s, with the FA absorbing some of its rules until there was little difference between games.

The oldest football competition in the world is the FA Cup, founded by CW Alcock and played by English teams since 1872. The first official match of international football was also held in 1872 between Scotland and England in Glasgow. CW Alcock. England is also home to the world's first football league, founded in Birmingham in 1888 by William McGregor, director of Aston Villa. The original format contained 12 clubs from the Midlands and Northern England.

The Aston Villa team in 1897, after winning the FA Cup and the Football League. The International Football Association Board (IFAB) are determined the laws of the game. The council was formed in 1886 after a meeting in Manchester of the Football Association, the Scottish Football Association, the Football Association of Wales and the Irish Football Association. FIFA, an international football organization, was established in Paris in 1904 and declared that it would respect the laws of the game of the Football Federation. The growing popularity of the international game led to the admission of FIFA representatives to the International Football Association's board of directors in 1913. The board is composed of four FIFA representatives and one representative from each of the four British associations.

Today, football is played at a professional level all over the world. Millions of people regularly visit football stadiums to follow their favorite teams, while billions more watch the game on television or the Internet. at an amateur level, a very large number of people also play football. According to a FIFA survey published in 2001, more than 240 million people from more than 200 countries regularly play football. Football has the largest global television audience in the sport.

In many parts of the world, football generates great passion and plays an important role in the lives of individual supporters, local communities and even nations. R. Kapuscinski says that Europeans who are polite, modest or humble easily fall into anger when they play or watch football games. Côte d'Ivoire's national football team contributed to the truce of the civil war in 2006 and helped reduce tensions between the government and rebel forces in 2007 by playing a match in the rebel capital Bouaké. . the two armies together peacefully for the first time. On the other hand, football is widely regarded as the final cause of the June 1969 football war between El Salvador and Honduras. Sport also exacerbated tensions at the beginning of the Yugoslav wars in the 1990s, when a match between Dinamo Zagreb and Belgrade's red star escalated into riots in May 1990.
