The highly criticized FIFA World Ranking has developed new criteria after the 2018 World Cup. Hoping to present a more logical image, the governing body of World Football explained in its August press release. 2018

"The formula, which was approved by the FIFA Council in June after a long period of testing, is to add/subtract points won or lost for the total points in the previous version of the ranking.

"The changes, of which there are many, include the fact that the inactive teams now maintain their point totals, without devaluing older games, being eliminated in important competitions like the FIFA World Cup ™."
